Computer Science

Year 9

Half Term 1

E-Safety - System Vulnerability

  • Pupils will develop an understanding a range of ways to use technology safely, respectfully, responsibly and securely, including protecting their online identity and privacy; recognise inappropriate content, contact and conduct and know ho to report concerns.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use.

E-safety, cyber bullying, system vulnerability, physical dangers, phishing, pharming, acceptable use policy

  • All resources for each lesson with be available on Teams for pupils to access from home.
Parents can support the learning by having an open discussion on e-safety and explaining the importance of staying safe online.
Parents can also encourage their children to complete the home learning activities to a high standard.

Half Term 2

Python Programming

  • Pupils will use two or more programming languages, at least one of which is textual, to solve a variety of computational problems; make appropriate use of data structures [for example, lists, tables or arrays]; design and develop modular programs that use procedures or functions.

Pupils will design, use and evaluate computational abstractions that model the state and behaviour of real-world problems and physical systems.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use.
Interactive development environment, data types, Boolean, alphanumeric, variables, iteration, sequencing, selection, input/output.

  • All resources for each lesson with be available on Teams for pupils to access from home.
Parents can support the learning by encouraging students to explain their learning to you. Parents can also encourage their children to complete the home learning activities to a high standard.

Half Term 3

Understanding Computers

  • Pupils will develop understanding of Boolean logic and some of its use in circuits and programming, understanding how numbers can be represented in binary, and be able to carry out simple operations on binary numbers.
Pupils will understand the hardware and software components that make up computer systems, and how they communicate with one another and other systems.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use.

Primary storage, secondary storage, star network, mesh network, binary, denary, data representation, logic gates.

  • All resources for each lesson with be available on Teams for pupils to access from home.
Parents can support the learning by encouraging their children to complete the home learning activities to a high standard.

Half Term 4

Creating Multimedia Components

  • Pupils undertake creative projects that involve selecting, using, and combining multiple applications, preferably across a range of devices, to achieve challenging goals, including collecting and analysing data and meeting the needs of known users.

Pupils create, re-use, revise and re-purpose digital artefacts for a given audience, with attention to trustworthiness, design and usability.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use.

    Photoshop, Animation, Data ,Logo

  • All resources for each lesson with be available on Teams for pupils to access from home.
Parents can support learning by encouraging their children to complete the home learning activities to a high standard.

Half Term 5

Presenting Multimedia Components

  • Pupils will understand and undertake creative projects that involve selecting, using, and combining multiple applications, preferably across a range of devices, to achieve challenging goals, including collecting and analysing data and meeting the needs of known users.

Create, re-use, revise and re-purpose digital artefacts for a given audience, with attention to trustworthiness, design and usability. Pupils will then go on to understand the requirement for compression when designing webpages

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use.

Keyframe, static, digital, interactive, navigation, master page, layout, design, components, effects, transition

  • All resources for each lesson with be available on Teams for pupils to access from home.
Parents can support learning by encouraging their children to complete the home learning activities to a high standard.

Half Term 6

Standard Algorithms

  • Pupils will learn how to develop an understanding of standard algorithms.  The learning will cover both searching and sorting algorithms.
Searching algorithms will focus on linear searches and binary searching; whilst sorting will focus on bubble and merge sorts.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use.

Bubble sort, Merge sort, Insertion sort, Linear search, Binary search, Algorithm, Abstraction, Iteration, Input, Output, Selection, Sequence.

  • All resources for each lesson with be available on Teams for pupils to access from home. Parents can also encourage their children to complete the home learning activities to a high standard.
