Half Term 1

The Voice and Bucket Drumming 

  • This unit which is split between singing and rhythm.

    The Voice:

    Students will learn about the importance of singing, and the different types of voices and will be introduced to the Young Voices repertoire in preparation for the launch of the YV choir at Horbury.

    Bucket Drumming:

    Students learn to recognise rhythm in grid notation; this develops into reading music from a score. This unit also introduces the idea of structure in music and leads to our first creative homework task

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use:

    Vocals, singing, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, choir, a capella, backing vocals, harmonies.

    Rhythm – Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move

    Pulse, tempo, metre, crotchet, quaver, minim, notation, grid notation, structure, binary, ternary, rondo, introduction, verse, chorus, bridge, middle 8, instrumental.

  • Encourage your child to participate in the lessons to help them gain confidence with group work and singing.

    Encourage your child to take part in extra-curricular activities like the school choir or Wakefield Youth Choir.

    Support them with their first homework; to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of pop song structure. They can do this in any creative way. For instance, they can make a video, do a painting or picture, write a poem, design their own bunting or make a Lego model.

Half Term 2

Changing Places

  • In this unit, students will learn about pitch and how to apply it to the rhythms they learnt in the last half term. They will use and develop this new knowledge to rehearse and perform a piece of music on the keyboards.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use:

    Pitch, melody, tune, stave, mnemonics, treble clef, leger lines, bar lines, notation.

  • Help them to revise the notes on the stave and give them support using Teaching Gadget, an online platform with quizzes on music theory.

  • Teaching Gadget – passwords to be created in half term 2.

Half Term 3

Gamelan

  • In this unit, we research and explore the rich culture of Indonesia.

    We use tuned percussion instruments to rehearse and perform as a class a piece of pentatonic Gamelan music.

Half Term 4

Ternary Form Composition 

  • In this unit, we develop our understanding of the structure through the use of Music Technology. Using music software, we create a piece of popular music into a Ternary form song, using loops and samples, alongside introducing composition skills and techniques.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use

    Structure, binary, ternary, rondo, music software, loops, samples, arranging, composing, developing, experimenting.

  • Listen to various music and talk about the structure. Ask your child questions about the music, ask them to name instruments, and interesting things about the music and see if they can identify key terms learned in the lesson.

Half Term 6

Instruments of the Orchestra

  • This unit looks in depth at the instruments of the orchestra. During 1 lesson each half term, the students will research a different instrument family.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use:

    Gamelan, Indonesia, aural tradition, pentatonic, Balungen, Peking, Kenong.

  • Ask them to explain what the keywords above mean and describe how they are using them in the lesson. Practice the Balungen notes that will be given out in the lesson to learn at home.

Half Term 5

Ukuleles

  • In this unit, students will begin to develop an understanding of chords and chord progressions. They will learn t how to read chord diagrams, identify parts of a ukulele and will work towards a whole class performance of a popular song.

  • The ideas pupils will understand and the words they will be able to use:

    Ukulele, Hawaii, tuning pegs, nut, fretboard, sound hole, strings, neck, headstock, body, frets, chords, chord progressions, chord diagrams.
